untitled

(seven monuments)

"untitled (seven monuments) conitues the artists' meditation
on the nature of the monument itself, as a tradition closely linked to colonialism,
and on the possibilities of new kinds of public art making."                    Media Release 10 April 2019, TarraWarra Museum of Art

In April 2019 we were delighted to host an opening ceremony for untitled (seven monuments).

This significant public art art installation was created by Senior Wurundjeri Elder, Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO, Sydney-based Wiradjuri-Kamilaroi artist, Jonathan Jones and Melbourne-based Celtic-Australian artist, Tom Nicholson. It comprises seven monuments installed around present-day Healesville to mark the original boundaries of Coranderrk Aboriginal Station when it was at its largest, 4,850 acres, in 1866.

Each monument is an upturned flagpole and brick footing, with a plaque on each face, surrounded by Coranderrk (Christmas Bush). Each monument tells a different part of Coranderrk’s story and visitors travel across Wurundjeri country as they visit them.

Coranderrk’s monument is situated at the confluence of Coranderrk Creek and Birrarung.

untitled (seven monuments) was commissioned by TarraWarra Museum of Art. It continues the contemplation of themes explored in the artists' earlier exhibition Future Memorials, 2013–14, curated by Victoria Lynn.

The project was supported by Yarra Ranges Council, the artwork’s current custodian.

The seven installations that make up untitled (seven monuments) are located at:

  • Everard Park Picnic area, Maroondah Highway.

  • Corner of Mt Riddell Rd and Airlie Rd.

  • Corner Don Rd and Mt Riddell Rd.

  • Roma Ave.

  • Nyora Rd, Mt Toolebewong.
